The Chevrolet Chevy II (also known as the Chevrolet Nova) is a compact car that was sold by Chevrolet between the 1962 and 1979 model years. The inaugural model of the GM X platform, the Chevy II was slotted between the Chevrolet Corvair (later the Chevrolet Vega) and the Chevrolet Chevelle within the Chevrolet model line. For 1969, the Chevy II nameplate was dropped, with all versions of the model line sold as the Nova. The first two generations of the model line were sold only by Chevrolet, with the third-generation Nova rebranded as the Buick Apollo, Pontiac Ventura, and Oldsmobile Omega. In 1975, the fourth-generation Nova shared its chassis (but no bodywork) with the Cadillac Seville; Buick renamed the Apollo as the Skylark, with Pontiac renaming the Ventura as the Phoenix. For 1980, GM downsized and redesigned the X platform (changing to front-wheel drive); Chevrolet dropped the Nova nameplate in favor of Chevrolet Citation. For 1985, Chevrolet revived the Nova nameplate for its NUMMI joint venture with Toyota, used for a subcompact using the body of the E80 Toyota Sprinter. Designated as the S platform, the fifth-generation Nova was slotted between the Chevrolet Chevette and the Chevrolet Cavalier in size; for 1989, the Chevrolet Nova was replaced by the Geo Prizm as Chevrolet moved its Japanese-developed cars into its Geo subbrand.
